There is a particular kind of silence that exists only between two and four in the morning. It is not the same silence that fills the early evening or the deep hours past midnight. It is thinner, more deliberate, and it has been disappearing for the last three hundred years as fast as gas lamps spread across European cities.
For most of human history, people did not sleep through the night in one continuous block. They slept twice. The pattern was called segmented sleep or biphasic sleep: you went to bed shortly after dark, slept for about four hours, woke up for an hour or two, then went back to sleep for another four until dawn. The waking period in the middle was not a disturbance or a problem to be solved. It was simply part of how things worked.
The first documented evidence comes from studies of historical records going back centuries. Researchers found references to “first sleep” and “second sleep” in medical texts, religious writings, and personal diaries from medieval Europe. People used the waking hours for quiet activities: reading by candlelight, praying, talking with their spouse, or simply lying awake thinking about things they would never think about at any other time of day.
The writer Roger Ekirch spent ten years researching this topic and found references to segmented sleep in sources spanning from ancient Greece to the twentieth century. In seventeenth century France, people called the middle waking period “the hour of insomnia” but did not view it as a medical problem. Some people got up and tended fires. Others wrote letters or worked on small crafts. Many simply lay in bed with their partners and talked about things that mattered at that hour.
The transition away from segmented sleep happened gradually over several centuries, but two forces accelerated it dramatically. The first was artificial lighting. Before gas lamps and electric bulbs, most people lived by the rhythm of daylight. When the sun went down, activity slowed because there was simply nothing to see past a few feet from a candle or fireplace. This made natural breaks in sleep inevitable. As cities installed more streetlights and wealthy households bought more candles, the hours between first and second sleep became filled with social activities instead of quiet rest.
The second force was industrialization. When factories required workers to arrive at specific times and keep strict schedules, the flexible sleeping patterns of the pre-industrial era became a liability. Factory owners did not care that their workers had been up for two hours in the middle of the night doing quiet work or talking with family. They cared about consistent attendance at six in the morning regardless of how people spent the hours before.
By the late nineteenth century, the sleeping habits of European and American cities had shifted dramatically. The middle waking period shrank from an hour or two to mere minutes as people went straight from first sleep to second sleep without any intentional break. Sleep became something you did all at once rather than something you divided into manageable chunks.
The modern understanding of sleep as a single continuous eight hour block is not a biological imperative. It is a cultural invention that emerged from the specific conditions of industrial society. When we talk about insomnia today as if it were a disease, we are describing a condition that would have been completely normal to our ancestors. Lying awake for an hour in the middle of the night and thinking quietly was not a problem to be solved with medication or sleep hygiene routines. It was just what you did.
I think about this when I lie awake at two in the morning and feel anxious because I am not sleeping properly. The anxiety itself keeps me from falling back asleep, creating a cycle that modern medicine treats with increasingly powerful drugs. But my great grandparents would have looked at that situation and told me to get up, light a candle, and do something useful while I was already awake.
The evidence suggests segmented sleep may have been healthier than continuous sleep in important ways. The middle waking period allowed the body to process the day’s experiences before entering deep sleep again. It provided natural opportunities for problem solving during hours when the mind was quiet and unpressured.
The counterargument is straightforward: industrial society required synchronized schedules, and segmented sleep made synchronization difficult. If workers went to bed at different times and woke up at different intervals, factories could not coordinate shifts or maintain production timelines. The transition away from segmented sleep was not a conspiracy by lighting companies or factory owners. It was a practical adaptation to the needs of an economy that valued predictability over individual rhythms.
But there is a cost we are only beginning to measure. Modern insomnia rates have climbed steadily since the nineteenth century, and sleep researchers have found that many people who believe they are getting eight hours of continuous sleep actually experience multiple micro-awakenings throughout the night. Their bodies want segmented sleep even when their schedules do not allow it.
The next time you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, consider that this might not be a malfunction. It might be an echo of a pattern that served our species well for thousands of years, disrupted by forces that moved faster than we could adapt to them. The silence between two and four in the morning exists whether we use it or not. Our ancestors knew something about what to do with it that we have largely forgotten.
