Then the feeling vanishes like a dream when you wake up and you are left wondering what just happened.
This is déjà vu and almost everyone experiences it at least once in their life. The word itself comes from French and literally means “already seen,” which is exactly how it feels, even though your conscious mind knows that is impossible. You have not been here before. The evidence is right in front of you. But the feeling is so strong that for a brief moment, rational thought loses.
What happens next is more interesting than the experience itself. We treat déjà vu as a curiosity, something to laugh about with friends or dismiss as a brain glitch. There is another angle worth considering. Some researchers have proposed that déjà vu is a temporal lobe seizure, a tiny electrical misfire that creates an artificial sense of familiarity without any other symptoms. This theory has genuine support because people who experience frequent déjà vu also report higher rates of certain neurological conditions. But this explanation only describes the mechanism, not the function. Even if seizures cause it in some cases, most people experience it occasionally and never develop any related disorder. The question is why a normal brain would produce this sensation at all.
The answer might be that déjà vu serves as an internal quality check on your memory system. When you encounter something genuinely familiar, your brain needs to confirm that the feeling of familiarity matches actual stored memories. Sometimes this verification process glitches and produces the sense of familiarity before the source is located. The result is a sensation that feels like recognition but lacks any recognizable content. You know you have been somewhere but cannot name where. This mismatch between feeling and content is what makes déjà vu so disorienting.
What I find most compelling about this phenomenon is how it exposes the constructed nature of every moment we experience. We walk through life assuming that our perception is a direct window onto reality, but déjà vu demonstrates that perception is always a reconstruction. The next time you experience déjà vu, do not dismiss it as a random glitch. Pay attention to what your body was doing in that moment. Were you tired? Stressed? Walking into a place that shared structural similarities with something from your past? The feeling is real even if its source is fabricated. And studying those fabrications tells us more about how we actually experience reality than any textbook explanation ever could.
You will never know for certain why it happens. The science is still catching up to the phenomenon, and some aspects may remain permanently mysterious. But the mystery itself is worth sitting with.
