Why Modern Bridges Are So Boring


The Golden Gate Bridge is orange because the primer underneath it was orange. That is not a design decision so much as an accident of supply chain logistics during the Great Depression. The engineers at the time needed a rust-inhibiting coat and the only one available happened to be International Orange, a color originally developed for industrial equipment. They painted the towers that way and everyone decided it looked magnificent.

That story matters because it reveals something about how we think about bridges today. When public infrastructure can accidentally become iconic, it means the people building it understood something fundamental about scale and place that most modern bridge engineers seem to have forgotten entirely.

I cross a bridge every morning on my way to work and I never notice it until something breaks. The asphalt deck is gray, the steel girders are painted some institutional green nobody ever argued about, and the concrete pylons look like they were extruded from the same mold as every other highway overpass in North America. There is nothing wrong with these bridges structurally. They do exactly what they need to do, which is move cars from one side of a river to the other without falling into it. But they also feel like afterthoughts, which is strange because a bridge is arguably the most visible piece of architecture any community commissions.

The Brooklyn Bridge took fourteen years to build and killed hundreds of workers in the process. Its designer, John Roebling, died from tetanus after an accident at the construction site. His son Washington inherited the project and suffered decompression sickness from spending hours inside the pressurized caissons that formed the foundation towers. He was so ill he could barely walk and had to direct construction by tying a rope to his bed and pulling himself through the scaffolding every morning. The bridge they built is still considered one of the great architectural achievements in American history because every detail about it communicates something specific about ambition and difficulty and the willingness of a community to invest heavily in something that would outlast them all.

Modern bridges do not communicate anything except cost efficiency. A typical highway overpass is designed by committee, value engineered until every aesthetic consideration has been stripped away, and built by contractors who are paid on a per-ton basis for steel fabrication. The result is a structure that could have been anywhere in the country without you noticing. This is not an accident. It is what happens when public infrastructure becomes a procurement problem rather than an architectural one.

There is a term engineers use called value engineering, which sounds like careful financial oversight but actually means systematically removing everything from a design that does not contribute directly to structural function. You start with a bridge that has some character and you chip away at it until all that remains is the minimum amount of material required to satisfy the building code. The process usually involves three meetings where people who have never looked at a bridge in their lives debate whether decorative elements on the parapet walls are worth two hundred thousand dollars. They are not, apparently, because every decorative element costs money and nobody wants to explain to their constituents why a city spent extra on something that does not make cars cross the river faster.

This logic works perfectly until you realize that people do not drive across bridges to reach the other side as quickly as possible. They drive across them while experiencing the bridge itself, which means the aesthetic quality of the structure is not an optional extra like decorative parapet walls. It is the primary experience of using the infrastructure at all. You can measure how long a commute takes with a stopwatch and you can calculate load bearing capacity with structural formulas, but nobody has written a spreadsheet equation for what it feels like to drive over something your city built specifically to connect two halves of itself.

The Golden Gate Bridge works as architecture not because anyone planned it that way from the beginning but because its designers understood that a bridge is a public statement about what a community values. The Art Deco details on the towers, the specific height chosen so aircraft could fly beneath it, the color that happens to be orange because of primer availability, all of these decisions communicate something about ambition and place and the belief that infrastructure deserves more than bare minimum compliance with structural codes.

Modern bridge design has traded that ambition for predictability. Every decision goes through a value engineering process that strips out anything unpredictable. The result is safe bridges that cross rivers efficiently and feel like nothing to the people who drive over them every day. That is not inherently wrong. Bridges are supposed to be safe first. But when safety becomes the only metric, you get infrastructure that functions perfectly and means nothing at all.

The next time you cross a bridge and do not notice it, consider whether that invisibility is the design succeeding or failing. A bridge that disappears into your daily routine while carrying cars from one side of the river to the other has accomplished its structural purpose. But a bridge that you notice, that makes you slow down for even half a second because something about its shape or scale or material catches your eye, that is infrastructure doing something beyond moving traffic. It is reminding you that your community built something across the water specifically to connect two places that could not reach each other without it.

That is worth noticing.
